Following a tragic surfing accident on Thursday September 3rd which left her in a critical condition in an Italian hospital, emerging reports from Italy have revealed Dutch supermodel, Yfke Sturm, has woken from her medically-induced coma.

The 33-year-old model, who gave birth to a baby boy in August, is understood to have sustained serious injuries as a result of being hit by a fellow jet surfer as she attempted to make her way to shore during a trip to the beach last week.

Yfke, who has walked for international brands including Dior and Marc Jacob, and served as an ambassador for the Dutch Red Cross foundation, has suffered a fractured skull and severe spinal injuries following the tragic accident.

Having been airlifted to a specialist hospital in the Italian city of Naples, the mum-of-one has fought for her life under the treatment of medical professionals.

Yfke's understandably devastated father, Wilfred Sturm, opened up about his daughter's injuries, saying: "She has a hairline fracture in her skull, but she hadn't suffered bleeding."

Speaking to The Telegraph, Next Models, Yfke's British representatives, said: "We are shocked to hear about this terrible accident. Our thoughts are with Yfke and her family at this time and we are praying for her speedy recovery.

Yfke is at risk of permanent paralysis following last week's devastating incident, but according to recent reports is now showing signs of improvement.

Our thoughts remain with Yfke's family, friends and baby son Alexander at this difficult time.
