A woman has given birth to a baby after crashing into a roundabout in County Kilkenny.
The woman was reportedly driving to hospital from her Carlow home when she went into labour, and crashed her car amid dense fog.
A number of passers-by rushed to the woman’s aid, helping to deliver her baby daughter safely.
An ambulance arrived at the scene shortly after to bring the mother and her child to a nearby hospital.
Mae Doyle, who helped to deliver the baby, was visibly emotional as she described the incident to RTÉ reporters.
“The driver’s door was opened and the lady was leaning over in the passenger seat, and she just said to me, ‘Catch my baby’. And I put down my two hands I caught her baby,” said Mrs Doyle.
Mrs Doyle, who has no midwifery training or experience, added: “I told her, ‘She’s alive and the ambulance is coming.’”
Medics say that the child is lucky to be alive after being born in such dramatic circumstances.
What an incredible story. We hope this new mum and her little one are recovering well in hospital.
