The experts are out on whether wearing an underwire bra in pregnancy is unsafe. However, you are likely to be hugely uncomfortable as your pregnancy progresses with the changing shape of your breasts. One of the first symptoms of pregnancy is the tenderness and enlargement of the breast which is the body’s natural way to prepare for feeding your new baby. On average a woman’s breast will grow by 55mm during pregnancy.
Health professionals advise against them as the underwire will interfere with the natural changes in your breast. Underwire can put unwanted pressure on the breast which can lead to mastitis and blocked milk ducts. This applies whether you are breast feeding or not. Additionally, as you may retain water as your pregnancy progresses, the underwire in a bra can exacerbate any resulting swelling and soreness.
So, whilst the jury is out on the medical side of it, one thing is sure. The changes mean that it is really important to wear a supportive and comfortable maternity bra.
