Congenital nystagmus is often caused by a neurological defect that stems from the inability or impairment of the system responsible for controlling eye movement and therefore the eyes are unable to fixate steadily.
There is no definite known cause for congenital nystagmus but it is often associated with different types of illnesses and conditions. It can also be sensory which means it is linked to problems with the eyes such as childhood cataracts.
Congenital nystagmus can also occur by itself or can be linked to other conditions such as albinism and Down’s syndrome.
