Having struck up a relationship through a reality show and married soon after, it seemed as if actress and presenter Denise Van Outen and husband Lee Mead were living a fairytale.
However, their split two years ago brought its fair share of heartbreak for the pair, particularly as parents to four-year-old daughter Betsy.
Speaking candidly about family life after the split, mother-of-one Denise admits that while the break-up was heartbreaking, she and Lee have been able to find a “nice arrangement”.
“It’s hard. I’m not going to lie. I’ve since watched another two of my friends go through it and I have so much empathy because I know exactly what they’re experiencing. It’s horrible,” Denise told MailOnline.com.
She admits that while the pair have an amicable relationship, sharing care of daughter Betsy, it has been important for them to focus on the fallout for themselves and not just for their little one.
“It’s not just about the children, you also have to make it work for you. You don’t want a miserable life. Some people bring it on themselves because they like the drama of it. I’ve just watched it with some other friends and I think, ‘You’re causing something that’s not necessary,’” the 40-year-old added.
The doting mum added that Betsy is already taking after her parents in that she is well able to ‘hold a tune’, but neither she nor Lee will be pushing their daughter to follow them into the entertainment industry.
“If she wants to do it, then yes, I’ll support her. But I don’t think either of us would be one of those pushy parents. I think a lot of that is about wanting to live your own dreams through your children, but we’ve both done it ourselves,” she said.
